When I started helping out at OKEV in Potsdam, I thought I was just offering my time. But what I found was a world of creativity, connection, and small moments that I’ll carry with me forever.
At the gallery, I saw firsthand how art has the power to bring people together. Whether it was setting up exhibitions or simply being part of the space, I felt like I was contributing to something meaningful, something that made people pause, reflect, and feel.
But my journey didn’t stop there. I assisted in a painting course for children, where I watched their confidence grow with every brushstroke. Some started out hesitant, unsure of their abilities, but by the end, they were creating with joy and freedom. Their excitement was contagious.
Then there was the theatre. I assisted with both children's and adult theatre courses, and I also took part in an adult theatre class myself. Watching people young and older step out of their comfort zones, express themselves, and build something together was incredibly inspiring. Theatre has this magic way of breaking down barriers, making people connect in ways they never expected.
Through all of this, I realized that volunteering isn’t just about helping others it’s about learning, growing, and experiencing the beauty of community. I didn’t just teach; I learned. I didn’t just assist; I became part of something bigger.
If you’re thinking about volunteering, do it. You might think you’re giving your time, but in reality, you’ll receive so much more. Whether it's in art, education, or something completely different, your passion and energy can make a real difference, not just for others, but for yourself too.
